Wow, I had such high hopes for this bottle. A little backstory on this particular one... During the end of 2021, the bourbon market absolutely took off. Everyone was trying to find "next big thing." Henry McKenna and Eagle Rare were on the rise and New Riff had burst on to the scene. My dad and found some highly rated reviews for this and we were certain it was going to blow up. So, we found one at our local liquor store for a very reasonable price, about $55 or so, and tried it.
I can honestly say, this has to be the single most disappointing bottle I've ever tried. I want to make it clear; it's not the worst, just the most disappointing. Larceny is lauded for having a nearly identical mash bill and distillation method as the famous Old Fitzgerald, both coming in at very high proofs. Having tried various Old Fitzgeralds, I went into this with an open mind and high expectations. I thought I would be getting an exquisitely crafted high proof bargain with a long finish.
Instead, I ended up with a burning, high proof bourbon that was more bitter and harsh over anything else. Frankly, it's not a terrible bourbon, I just could not get past the high expectations I had for it. As a high proof bourbon for the price that it's at, the deal is easy stomach. That being said, there are plenty of others I'd rather get instead.
I firmly believe everyone has a taste for something, and a large number of you that have tried it probably think I'm crazy. All that being said, It's not for me. As always, enjoy and drink safely.
