Reviews and Opinions

my biggest pet peeve with review sites is they focus on msrp pricing, or the pricing the distillery sells them for. very few bottles are actually available at msrp, so I will be evaluating them at their market value. the other note is, these are not in depth reviews, with tasting notes and bottle biographies. just quick hits for the people that want a little info and insight and want to move on. happy drinking!

Blanton's Gold Label

Blanton's Gold Label Bourbon is a part of the esteemed Blanton's lineup, renowned for its pioneering role in the single-barrel bourbon category. Known for its elegance and smooth profile, the Gold Label edition offers a slightly elevated experience compared to its sibling, the Original Single Barrel. But does it live up to the hype? Its reviews have been long and storied. Is my take different then the norm? Here's a closer look.

One of Blanton's defining features is its iconic packaging, and the Gold Label is no exception. The bottle, with its distinctive round shape and ornate horse-and-jockey stopper, is a collectible in its own right. The gold labeling adds an extra touch of luxury, setting expectations high even before the first pour. Its aesthetic appeal makes it a standout on any shelf and hints at the premium experience within. Now, I'll admit, I am partial to this bottle strictly from an ascetics point of view because I had it engraved for my dad's 60th birthday.

Upon nosing, Blanton's Gold Label presents a delightful bouquet of aromas. The initial wave is rich with caramel and vanilla, classic bourbon notes that invite you in. As I delve deeper, hints of dried fruit, toasted oak, and a touch of spice emerge, adding complexity. There's a subtle floral undertone that rounds out the aromatic profile, making it both inviting and intriguing. While the nose is undoubtedly pleasant, some might find it lacks the pronounced intensity found in other high-proof bourbons.

The first sip of Blanton's Gold Label is a testament to its craftsmanship. It greets the palate with a smooth, creamy texture that is both rich and satisfying. The flavor profile mirrors the aroma with prominent notes of caramel and vanilla, accompanied by hints of honey and buttered toast. The mid-palate introduces a gentle spice—think cinnamon and nutmeg—adding depth without overwhelming the senses.

As the bourbon develops on the palate, notes of dried apricot and light citrus make an appearance, contributing to a well-rounded and harmonious experience. The oak influence is present but not overpowering, providing structure and a touch of dryness to balance the sweetness. While the Gold Label is undeniably smooth and enjoyable, some aficionados might argue that it lacks the boldness and complexity offered by other premium releases. I would truly be one of those.

The finish is where Blanton's Gold Label truly shines. It is long and warming, leaving behind a pleasant aftertaste of sweet caramel, gentle spice, and a whisper of oak. The smoothness persists, making it an excellent sipper for those who appreciate a refined and easy-drinking bourbon. However, for those seeking a more robust and lingering finish, the Gold Label might fall just short of expectations.

Blanton's Gold Label Bourbon is a well-crafted, sophisticated expression that embodies the elegance and tradition of the Blanton's brand. It offers a smooth and satisfying experience with a flavor profile that is both classic and approachable. Its presentation is unmatched, making it a prized possession for collectors and a superb gift for bourbon enthusiasts.

However, the Gold Label's smoothness and subtlety, while appealing to many, may not satisfy those who crave a more intense and complex bourbon experience. Its premium price point also invites scrutiny, especially given the myriad of high-quality bourbons available at a similar or lower cost.

Blanton's Gold Label is a commendable bourbon that delivers on its promise of quality and refinement. It may not be the boldest or most complex offering in the single-barrel category, but it excels in providing a luxurious and pleasurable sipping experience. For those who value smoothness and elegance, Blanton's Gold Label is certainly a worthwhile addition to any bourbon collection. The only thing I'll caviot this with is it has to be within a reasonable pricepoint. We should not forget that at the end of the day, the MSRP of this bottle is $120. Bear that in mind when you are looking at prices north of double that.

As always, enjoy, and drink safely.
